1996: A
Record-Breaking Year for the VSE

The Vancouver Stock Exchange eclipsed several annual records
during 1996, including volume and value of shares traded and money raised by VSE-listed
companies. Several monthly, daily and weekly records fell during the year as well.
The volume of shares traded on the VSE reached 8.3 billion during 1996, surpassing the
previous record of 6.1 billion shares traded during 1995 by 35 per cent.
This year's value of $11.99 billion crushed the previous record of $6.78 billion traded in
1993 and was up 87 per cent over last year's value of $6.4 billion.
A record $2.1 billion was raised through the VSE during the year, up 82 per cent over 1995
levels. Mineral exploration companies raised $1.53 billion during 1996 for a 73 per cent
share of total financings, while high-technology companies raised $194.4 million and oil
& gas firms raised $81.5 million.
December's volume of 505 million shares was up five per cent over December 1995, yet down
13 per cent from the previous month. The value of shares traded rose 45 per cent over the
same period last year, but declined 23 per cent from last month.
The Composite Index added three per cent to its value during the month, closing at 1190.38
on December 31. The VSE Composite is up 50 per cent over the its December, 1995 close of
795.93.
The VSE welcomed five new listings during the month: Nordac Resources Ltd. (December 9),
Citation Resources Inc. (December 16), Mosaic Oil N.L. (December 17), Wamco Resources
Limited (December 23) and Caledonian Pacific Minerals N.L. (December 24). This brings the
total number of new listings to 49 for 1996.
There were no reverse take-overs during December. |
