The S&P/CDNX Composite Index (JX) The S&P/CDNX Composite Index, Canada's benchmark index for the public
venture capital marketplace, is managed by Standard and Poor's, a leading global provider
of financial information and investment analysis. It is a market capitalization-based
index meant to provide an indication of performance for companies listed on the CDNX.
The index does not have a fixed number of companies, and is
revised quarterly based on the Criteria for Inclusion and Maintenance Policies accessible
through the links below. The revision process involves removing companies that comprise
less than 0.05% of the weight of the index, and adding companies whose weight, when
included, will comprise greater than 0.05% of the index. New candidates will only be added
at the quarter-end as per the quarterly revision procedures.
CDNX-listed companies are eligible for inclusion in the
S&P/CDNX Composite Index if they are incorporated under Canadian federal, provincial,
or territorial jurisdictions, and represent a relative weight of at least 0.05% of the
total index market capitalization. Stocks eligible for inclusion must generally be listed
on the CDNX for at least 12 full calendar months as of the effective date of the quarterly
revision.
You will notice that the value of the new S&P/CDNX
Composite Index is lower than the closing value of the old CDNX Index on December 7, 2001.
Due to the fact that this new index is in no way related to the old CDNX index, a baseline
value of 1000 was determined as a starting point for the calculation of the new index's
value. This number does not reflect a lower relative worth for the CDNX market - rather,
it is a starting point for the measurement of the relative worth of the CDNX market going
forward from December 10, 2001.
