Market activity on the Canadian Venture Exchange
(CDNX) continued to reach new highs in March, as trading volume, value, transactions and
the CDNX Index surpassed previous records.
On March 7, 2000, a record volume of 170 million shares traded. New
highs for daily value and number of trading transactions were reached on March 6, when
$274 million and 66,571 trades were recorded. The volume of shares traded surpassed 2.5
billion during the month, up five per cent over February. The value of shares traded rose
22 per cent during March to reach $4.2 billion.
The CDNX Index climbed to a record level of 4471.84 on March 20
before retreating to 4312.24 on March 31, 2000, a 13 per cent increase over February. The
mining index led the CDNX sector indices with a 15 per cent gain, followed by the oil
& gas index with a nine per cent rise, and the technology index, which was up one per
cent.
